Paige Reid

Girls Basketball • Girls Tennis
Year: 2017
2017 Female Athlete of the Year

Paige’s career at Holly HS, both in the athletic and academic arenas, was fantastic. She graduated with 3.807 GPA and 8 varsity letters to her credit.

Basketball was the name of her game in the winter and was in the starting five since her freshman year. The Bronchos had an amazing 2013-14 season going undefeated (20-0) during regular season play and winning the FML and District Championships. The season ended with an impressive 22-1 record. Paige earned HM all league as a freshman that year as well as All District honors. Paige continued to be an impact player for the Bronchos throughout her career at Holly High and captained the team her last two seasons. The FML coaches voted her 2nd team all league her final three years of high school. Paige earned State Bank Athlete of the Week and All District honors all four years. Her teammates voted Paige “Most Dedicated” her first three seasons and this, her senior year, she was voted “Most Valuable” and given the “Leadership” award. In February, the Flint Metro League athletic directors recognized Paige as our Kiwanis Athlete of the Month and in March Paige was named as one of the top 25 players in Oakland County. Paige finished her career in fourth place of all-time scorers with 907 points.

Head Coach Dave Hall stated, “Paige is always someone you could depend on to do whatever the basketball team needed. If we needed her to score, she scored. If we needed her to calm our team down, she did. She is currently the 4th all time leading scorer in Holly Girls Basketball history but she will be remembered by her coaches as something much more than a great basketball player.”

Asst. Coach Casey Lombard stated, “For four years Paige exemplified the traits and qualities we ask of our student athletes. She excelled both on the court and in the classroom. When times got tough, she worked harder and was someone I thoroughly enjoyed teaching and coaching.”

In the spring, Paige moved from the basketball court to the tennis court. I began summarizing Paige’s tennis career and then heard from tennis Coach Will Sophiea. I only asked for a few words about Paige but got much more. He did a great job of giving you insight into who Paige was and what she means to her team. Coach Sophiea stated, “I have had the opportunity to work with and watch Paige Reid in various settings for several years. Paige is an invaluable asset to not only our tennis program, but also our entire high school. While the influence she has had on our tennis program is exemplary, I have also seen Paige thrive in other roles as well such as a loving older sister, an encouraging basketball teammate, and an extremely mature and respectful high school student. Paige is an amazing individual. Her positivity, dedication, and selflessness are three qualities that set Paige apart from other high school students.

I first met Paige when she was in middle school. I was teaching the tennis clinic that she was enrolled in. One memory I have of Paige Reid the middle schooler was regardless of how frustrating learning a new sport like tennis can be, Paige consistently had a giant smile on her face. She is always glowing with positivity and it is contagious among her teammates and classmates.

In addition to the being the captain of our tennis program at Holly High School, Paige has also been involved in Student Council, National Honor Society, Rho Kappa, and LIFT and is captain of the varsity basketball team. Paige also challenges herself in the classroom as she takes multiple advanced placement and honors courses each school year. She is able to do all this while carrying a 3.85 grade point average. In addition to her involvement in extracurriculars and academics at Holly High School, she somehow finds time to volunteer outside of school as well. For spring break 2016, Paige traveled to Monterrey, Mexico with an organization through her church. During this trip she fixed houses, built a new children’s home, and most importantly spent countless hours being the delightful person that Paige is among many young children who need positivity in their lives. Paige is also a part of the River Youth Group and Bible Club at her church.

While I am aware of the many talents Paige has, I have the most experience with her on the tennis court. Paige is an excellent tennis player and has held down the top doubles flights in our program in her three years on varsity. She has been a State Semifinalist at the number 2 doubles flight and an overall three time Regional Champion including one title at the number 1 doubles flight. Paige has earned some of the most prestigious awards our program gives out. Among these awards are: Most Improved, Most Dedicated, Excellence in Doubles, and Leadership. These awards are voted on by her teammates and coaches. Her work ethic is something that is apparent not only on the tennis court, but in everything that Paige does. Her dedication is proven time after time, including driving across the state on school nights in order to play both high school tennis and AAU basketball in the same season. Paige has also helped run various fundraising events for our program. Paige’s dedication and selflessness are second to none."

Coach Sophiea continued, "Paige is an outstanding leader. She is constantly encouraging teammates on and off the court. Paige takes great initiative, is extremely reliable, and is everything a coach needs a captain to be. She is the definition of “leading by example.” I cannot say enough wonderful things about Paige Reid. Her positivity, dedication, and selflessness go above and beyond that of her peers. Paige Reid is a special individual that coaches dream of having on their teams, teachers hope to have in their classrooms, and parents pray that their child will someday grow up to be like."
