Football • Wrestling • Boys Track & Field
Year: 2013
2013 Male Athlete of the Year

Johnny had a tremendous high school career. Johnny was a "triple threat" athlete for the Bronchos his senior year earning varsity letters in football, wrestling and track & field. During his high school career he earned nine varsity letters...3 in football, 2 in wrestling and 4 in track & field.

Johnny's accomplishments on the gridiron were impressive. As a sophomore and leading rusher on the team, he earned 1st Team FML, Most Valuable Offensive Player and FML Scholar Athlete. His junior year he repeated as our teams leading rusher and landed on the record board in 3rd place with most yards in school history. The team was crowned FML co-champs ending a drought since our last league title. (Which, by the way was in 1952 when we were a member of the Wayne-Oakland League) Johnny earned 1st Team FML, Most Valuable Offensive Player, Tri-County Times Player of the Year and the FML Scholar Athlete award. 2012 proved to be another great season and now, at the end of his high school football career, he is on our record board five times. His records include:

--Highest ALL-TIME rusher in school history - 3657 yards
--Highest SEASON rusher in school history – 1440 yards
--Most Touchdowns in a season – 25
--Most Touchdowns in a career – 56
--Most Yards in a career – 3,635
--Johnny also holds a FML record ... most touchdowns in a game – 7

During his senior year, he was our Team's Most Valuable Player, Most Valuable Offensive Player, Cornerstone Award, Oakland Press 2nd Team All County, 1st team Flint Metro League, 1st team All-State and FML Scholar Athlete. Coach Culloty stated, "When people talk of the history of Holly Football...The name Johnny Williams will be one that is listed among the best to ever play for the Bronchos. Under Johnny's leadership at QB the Bronchos amassed three straight winning seasons, two play-off appearances and Holly's first conference championship in 59 years and first FML title. Hats off to Johnny Williams for a great career."

Johnny wrestled as a freshman...and returned to the mat her senior year. Even after two and a half years of no wrestling at all his sheer athleticism attributed to a successful year earning 3rd team FML and contributing to the teams FML championship. Once again Johnny was FML Scholar Athlete. Coach Pluta stated, "The thing I will remember most about Johnny is his will to win and his 'do whatever it takes' attitude. Holly Wrestling has a saying "compete with Holly Heart". No one on this year's team exemplified that attitude more than Johnny."

During the two winters when Johnny did not wrestle, he was a member of our Powerlifting Team which were crowned Regional and State Champions in 2011 and Regional Champs last year.

In the spring Johnny headed back to the stadium, this time to run around the football field. As a freshman, Johnny was a member of our 1600m relay team that finished 1st in the FML, 3rd In Oakland County and 3rd at Regional’s. Individually he placed 5th in the 400 at Regional’s. His sophomore year our 1600m relay team repeated as league champs, finished 2nd in Oakland County and Regionals and qualified for the Division I MHSAA State Finals. Johnny earned 1st team FML in the 800m relay and 2nd team FML in both the 200 and 400. Our 1600m relay team earned a three-peat Johnny's junior year finishing 1st in the FML. Johnny also earned 2nd team FML in both the 400m relay and the 800m relay and 3rd team FML in the 100. During his senior year, Johnny earned 1st FML in the 400m relay, 800m relay, 1600m relay, and 3rd FML in the 100m dash. Our 400m relay team broke our school record at the regional meet and qualified for the MHSAA State Finals when they ran a 43.35. This means that Johnny was on not one, but two record boards...football and track & field. Johnny was a FML scholar-athlete during track season his sophomore, junior and senior years. Coach Basydlo stated, "Johnny had a goal coming into High School ... to play college football, he never strayed from it, remained focused and has achieved it. He will compete for Michigan Tech in the fall. His passion for athletics shows through in his work ethic and positive attitude. He used Track and Field to gain speed and conditioning, all the while helping lead the teams to 3 league titles. He helped teach the younger athletes about work ethic and being a competitor. He showed younger athletes that you should be more than a one sport athlete and how that can help you achieve your goals. ". Johnny, to me that means, because of the example you set, even though you won't be walking the halls of Holly High, you'll still have an impact on Holly Athletics in the years to come."

Johnny was named State Bank Athlete of the Week three times during his senior campaign, once each season.

Johnny enjoyed being involved in school activities too and was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Spanish Club and Captain’s Club.

Johnny's exemplary work ethic carried over to the classroom and he graduated with a 3.65 gpa.
