Shannon Westfall

Girls Cross Country • Girls Bowling • Girls Track & Field
Year: 2013
2013 Female Athlete of the Year

During Shannon's career at Holly HS she was a three-sport athlete all four years amassing 12 varsity letters...four in each cross country, bowling and track & field. At HHS we have a "triple threat" award given to those who earn three varsity letters during a school year. Shannon has earned this high honor every year.

In the fall, Shannon excelled on the cross country course. She earned all league honors every year, honorable mention once, 2nd team twice and 1st team Flint Metro League during her senior campaign. Twice she was named the Most Dedicated runner on the team. Veteran cross country coach Matt Weisdorfer shares the following..."Shannon was a quiet and unassuming leader who led by example. When she spoke up in team meetings, teammates took notice and listened. Shannon had to endure a lot of injuries. She never quit even though I am sure it crossed her mind more then a few times. I will never forget her junior year when she was on the 3rd best team in Flint Metro History and earned all-conference honors. Just 11 months prior she underwent surgery (Torn labrum away from bone and rips in labrum; bone spur … surgery in Nov after soph year) She was not able to run a step all winter. Even in the spring and most of the summer, it is my understanding she struggled. I have to believe she willed herself to greatness that fall, as a result. Shannon will always be a winner in life. She has learned the ideals of hard work, dedication and teamwork, as a result of being in sports."

During the winter months you could find Shannon at the bowling alley. She earned all league honors three of her four years...HM as a FR, 2nd team as a JR and 1st team as a senior. Her team was crowned Oakland County Champions not just once but twice...an outstanding feat considering 45-50 teams compete for this title each year. Shannon's average as a freshman was in the 120's and by the end of her career is was in the 170s. Coach Fred Walz stated, "Shannon was the lone senior on the varsity bowling team. Her leadership and experience helped to lead the team to its second Oakland County championship as well as a second place FML finish...the best since becoming a sport. The growth in her game in this past year was incredible and showed her dedication and determination. Best of all, she found a way to be serious and also keep the game fun. It has been a pleasure to coach her over the years and she will be missed."

Track & Field was Shannon's spring sport and she competed regularly in the 3200m run, 1600m run and occasionally the 800m run. Shannon qualified to compete in the MHSAA Regional every year. In 2011 she earned the teams Most Dedicated award. Her senior year, she served as team captain and led our team to a Flint Metro League title. Coach Basydlo stated..."Shannon is a very tough athlete both mentally and physically. She will work hard when a coach is not looking, she will push when she is tired and she dig deep when a race is on the line. Her work ethic is one that can be a model for many athletes. Shannon trained all year for her running seasons, both Cross and Track. She was always willing to do extra to be the best, she would do aqua training at 5am and then run after school to help her with the team goals and her own goals. Her positive attitude and her competitive nature will really be missed."

Shannon was chosen State Bank Athlete of the Week three times during her senior year.
