Doug Shepherd was a tremendous athlete during his days at Holly HS. During his tenure he earned 7 varsity letters, 3 in basketball and 4 in soccer. During his senior year, Doug was named the Tri-County Athlete of the Year. Doug also was honored with the prestigious Karl Richter Award during the Memorial Day Celebration.

As a soccer player, Doug served the team as captain and was the team MVP his senior year. His career stats include 52 goals and 32 assists. Honors Doug received during his soccer career include: 3-time – 1st team Flint Metro League, 3-time 1st team Tri-County Area; 2-time – 1st team Flint All-Area team. Doug was named to the Academic All-State team his senior year.

Although he loved both sports, Doug excelled in basketball. He was named the Varsity basketball team’s MVP as a sophomore, Junior and Senior. He accumulated impressive stats in his three varsity basketball campaigns, eclipsing the 1,000 point mark with a total of 1,095 total points. For his career Doug averaged 17.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 2.1 assists per game. He was the FML leading scorer his senior year and that same year finished second in assists. The Oakland Press named him the Most Underrated Player in Oakland County. Honors Doug received during his basketball career include: 2nd team FML honors his sophomore year, 1st team FML his junior and senior years. Doug was also 1st team All Tri-County Area; 1st team All-County Class A (Oakland Press), as well as receiving All-State mention by the Detroit News and Free Press. His senior year, Doug was named to the Oakland County All-Star team and won the Kiwanis Club of Flint student-athlete of the month,. Doug was named to the Academic All-State team his senior year.

Doug’s stellar performance was not limited to the athletic playing field. He was the class president and served on the student council. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. The Optimist Club of Holly recognized him with their Outstanding Leadership Award. To top it off, Doug was elected Homecoming King his senior year.

At Albion College, Doug played four years of varsity basketball, starting and serving as team captain his junior and senior years. A highlight of his college career was winning the MIAA Tournament Championship and receiving a bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Again, Doug earned Academic All-League honors and was Honorable Mention All-League. While at Albion, Doug also served as president of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. In 1998, Doug graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Economics and Management. Doug currently serves on the Albion College Alumni Board of Directors. Doug continued his education after Albion and in 2002 he graduated Cum Laude with a Juris Doctor Degree from Michigan State University College of Law.

Along with his wife, Mary Ann, and their two children, Allee and Harrison, Doug resides in Traverse City, where he is an attorney with the law firm of Brandt, Fisher, Alward & Roy. As an entrepreneur, Doug is also president and founding member of E.M.L. Property Group, a real estate investment company.

Doug would like to take this opportunity to say a special thanks to those who made this honor possible, especially his wife, Mary Ann (the real athlete in the family), his parents, Harold and Lurae, his best friend and brother, David, his sister Stacey, his lifelong teammate and cousin, Steve, as well thanking all of his teammates, the Holly teachers and coaches, including Ken Opoka, Chuck Keafer, Scott Baker, Nick Ochoa and Joe Blakely. Finally, he would also like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful fans of Holly athletics, especially the legendary “Holly Super Fans” as they were known in the 90’s.
