Dick played three sports, football, basketball and baseball while in high school. He continued playing baseball after graduation. At 17, he had a tryout with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played class C semi-pro baseball in Roscommon, he played while in the Air Force and as a freshman at Central Michigan University.

His coaching career began in 1955 in the small town of Frederic. Dick coached basketball for four years, started the school’s baseball team. Three of those years he was the school superintendent.

In 1959 he headed to Sebewaing. He remained there for six years…all the while coaching football, basketball and baseball while working as the school’s athletics director.

In 1965, Flint (now Burton) Bendle hired Dick. He coached basketball and football for six years.

Dick spent the next four years in Mancelona where he continued coaching basketball and baseball.

Holly was fortunate to hire Dick in 1975. Here he served as head varsity basketball and JV football coach. He was named Oakland County Class B Coach of the Year in 1977 and in 1987 was inducted into the Michigan High School Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

An amazing statistic Dick has to his credit is that in 30 years of coaching, he had only one losing season. His record is 368-127.

Dick married Beverly in 1951 and have five children…all have been active in sport. Over the years, Beverly missed only one game that Dick coached.
