Virgil graduated from High School in 1940. He earned eight varsity letters...two in football, four in basketball, and two in baseball. He was an end, guard and punter for the football team. In 1939, he was awarded Honorable Mention All-State in football. Virgil was the center on the varsity basketball team all four years. He was a pitcher on the baseball team. His senior year the team was undefeated and won the league championship.

Upon graduation, Virgil had an interview with the Detroit Tigers and a workout with the Cleveland Indians farm club, the Flint Indians…but Uncle Sam called and he joined the United States Air Force. He was in the service from February of 1942 until October of 1946.

Upon his return from the Pacific theater, he married Barb Wingelmire. They have one daughter and one grandson. In 1983, after more than 30 years as a salesman, he retired from the Automobile Club of Michigan.
