Cottrell was a stand out track athlete at HHS. He won six Flint Metro League titles from 1969-71 and lead the team to FML titles three straight years. During his career, Cottrell won every 100 and 220 yard races and anchored every winning 880 yard relay. As a senior, Cottrell led the Bronchos to their first Michigan High School Athletic Association state track and field championship when he placed fifth in the 100 yard dash, third in the 200 yard dash, and anchored the 880 yard relay team to a third place finish. He was the captain of that championship team. His FML records lasted for over a dozen years.

Cottrell is retired from the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford and still lives in Holly.
