Karl was a member of the Bronchos basketball and football teams, including Holly’s 1959 basketball team that advanced to the Class B state championship before losing 52-47 to River Rouge.

Karl gained the admiration of people all over the world when he served as a combat pilot during the Vietnam War. On July 28, 1967, during his 199th mission, he was killed in action.

His portrait hangs in the Karl W. Richter Hall at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The academy’s class of 2008 is honoring Karl by wearing arm patches on their uniforms (see other displays in Hall of Fame hallway). The Holly Area School district named the old Holly HS the Richter Intermediate School in 2004.
