As a 1970 graduate of Holly High School, Roger was the MHSAA Track and Field 120 yard hurdle runner up in Class B. In his high school track and field career, Roger won three Flint Metro League Championships and captured three MHSAA Regional Championships in the hurdles. In addition to having two All-State performance years, Roger also held the Greater Flint Area hurdle record of 14.5 seconds for over 20 years.

Roger ran track and field for four years at Eastern Michigan University. He was the Huron captain his senior year.

Roger has worked for IBM for many years. He resides in Okemos with his wife Jodi (the former Jodi Mitchell).
