Mark was a Class A All-State cross country runner in 1984 and 1985. During his senior year the team won league, county and regional championships and was ranked #1 in the state.

Mark was the captain of the cross country team, he was a two-time FML champion, and Oakland County champion. He placed second at the regional meet, and he was a three-time first team all-league runner. Mark finished 5th at the AAU National cross country championships. Mark was selected as the Tri County News – High School Athlete of the year in 1986.

Mark graduated third in the HHS class of 1986 with a 3.91 GPA. He was a member of the National Honor Society and senior class president. Mark also received the Carl Richter Memorial Award.

After graduation, Mark received a congressional nomination and attended the US Naval Academy. In 1990 he graduated from the academy with engineering degree and was commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy. While at the academy he lettered three years in cross country and qualified for the NCAA championships – Div I.

Mark served as an officer in the Navy for six years as a nuclear engineer. Upon leaving the military, he accepted a position as a project engineer for a Michigan based company in 1986. Currently, Mark resides in Ann Arbor with his wife Dianne. His children are Victoria, Phillip and Brendan.
